Terms and Conditions

Who may enter and how to win

  1. Entry for the Bevins Award (the “Competition”) is subject to acceptance of these terms and conditions.
  2. The Competition is open to UK residents of the UK aged 18 (by 31 May 2009) and over.
  3. To enter the Competition entrants must submit two copies of an article, or articles, relating to one topic. An article includes audio or audio visual content, eg broadcast or web-based reports. The article(s) must have been published between 1 June 2008 and 31 May 2009 inclusive. The purpose of submitting more than one article is to enable entrants to present a campaign.

However, no more than five articles may be submitted.

Entrants who submit on more than one topic will be excluded. Entries must be sent either by e-mail to the Competition e-mail address, bevinsprize@googlemail.com, or posted to Bridget Rulski,
The Bevins Award, 3-7 Herbal Hill, London EC1R 5EJ.

  4. All entries must have a note attached providing the name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and employer (if appropriate) of the entrant. They must also attach a letter of confirmation from the publisher of the article(s) of the authenticity of the author.
  5. All entries must be received by 17:00 on Friday 14th August 2009.

Any entries received after this closing date will not be accepted. The Bevins Trust (“The Trust”) reserves the right to change the closing date where the entries are of insufficient quality.
No responsibility is taken for entries that are lost, delayed, misdirected or incomplete or cannot be delivered or entered for any technical other reason.

Proof of delivery of the entry is not proof of receipt. The Trust shall not be responsible for the return of entries.

  6. Entries should not have been previously published and should be the sole original work of the entrant, or entrants in the event that a team enter as one entry.
  7. Incomplete entries and entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted. Only one entry per person can be accepted.
  8. The Bevins Trust will appoint a team of no fewer than five judges, who will select a shortlist of entrants whose submissions best fit the criteria and are, in the judge’s view, the best entries. The shortlist will be published on this website, and distributed to interested organisations.

The judges will also choose a winner, who will be announced at the Society of Editors annual conference in November 2009. The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into with entrants. Full details of the judging panel can be provided on request.

  9. Further information regarding the shortlist publication and the announcement of the Winner will be posted on this website from time to time.
  10. The Winner will receive a trophy, to be presented at the Society of Editors annual conference dinner.
  11. In consideration of The Trust agreeing to consider their entry, each entrant:
    • a) agrees that The Trust and each of the partners may publish their name in connection with the Award, and any applicable photographs;
    • and
    • b) warrants that the entry is their own original work, that it is not defamatory and that it shall not infringe any third party rights including, without limitation, privacy.
  12. The Trust and its partners reserve the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, this Competition with or without prior notice due to reasons outside their control.
  13. The Trust reserves the right at any time to change these terms and conditions.
